Game Two: Australia v Mexico
Australia took on a very tough Mexican team this afternoon on a backfield known as ‘Fenway Park’. With Mexico coming off a convincing win over Canada the night before the boys knew they were in for a battle today.
Australia jumped out ahead in the first inning thanks to a lead off double off the fence in right. Mexico leveled the score with a long solo home run and would later extend their lead to 3-1. Australia was able to avoid further damage after loading the bases with 1 out in the 5th. Flynn Stallworthy made a nice play behind the 3rd base bag and threw home for the force-out. Gunning down the would be 4th run would later prove to be a huge play.
With one out and a runner on first in the top of the 6th inning, the boys managed to tie the game with a long 2-run home run to straight away center field to tie it up. The boys would then take the lead with a pinch hit solo home run giving them a 4-3 lead heading in to the bottom of the 6th inning.
The game looked all but over, but with 2 outs the Mexican boys were able to keep the game alive with a 2-out single to right. Some sloppy play by the Australians allowed the Mexicans to tie the game up before a giving up a 2-out, 2-run game walk-off home run.
This was certainly a tough loss for the Australians though there were some outstanding at bats by several players and overall the pitching was very good.
Australia will next take on Japan in what should prove to be the toughest game thus far at 3.30pm at ‘Nationals Park.’
Note: Sebastian McAlister did not play
